Biogen to explore merger opportunities

Chicago, Oct. 12 - Biogen Idec Inc. said its board has authorized the company's management to evaluate whether third parties would have an interest in acquiring the company.

Investors expressing interest in a possible deal with Biogen include Carl Icahn, according to a press release.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based pharmaceutical company said it hired Goldman Sachs & Co. and Merrill Lynch & Co. as financial advisers to assist in the process.
