Emerita Capital, EQM Indexes launch Blockchain BLOK 50 Global Index

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., Jan. 25 – Emerita Capital Indices, in collaboration with EQM Indexes LLC, launched the Blockchain BLOK 50 Global Index on Dec. 29, according to a press release.

The index was co-developed to track the combined performance of the 50 leading public companies in the blockchain ecosystem.

The blockchain is a decentralized ledger shared across users that facilitates the process of recording transactions and tracking assets across a business network.

“This foundational technology is expected to pave the way for significant disruptions across many industries,” the release said.

In order to be eligible for inclusion in the index, companies must derive revenue from and/or are investing in blockchain technology, blockchain companies or blockchain-enabled applications. This includes companies that are at the forefront of research and development, testing and implementation of blockchain technology, and/or are partnering with or directly investing in blockchain companies and/or profiting from blockchain-based applications such as cryptocurrency mining.

“We are excited to offer exposure to the leading companies engaged in advancing blockchain-based technology,” Gabriel Rojo, founder of Emerita Capital, said in the release.

“These companies offer investors the opportunity to participate in the growth of blockchain, while potentially serving as a less volatile hedge for blockchain-based applications such as cryptocurrency and [initial coin offerings].

“Based on backtested results, blockchain exposure has a low correlation to traditional asset classes and serves as potential diversifier for holders of bitcoin and other crypto assets.”

Emerita is a San Francisco-based independent research firm focused on blockchain and artificial intelligence. EQM is a San Diego-based provider of index benchmarks for exchange-traded products.
