By Rebecca Melvin

New York, Feb. 12 - W.R. Grace & Co. asked for court approval of a required $17.8 million contribution to its benefit pension plans due April 15, according to a Monday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

The amount could be less depending on the final amount calculated specifically for the 2008 plan year, which will be included in the final 2008 actuarial report, according to the filing.

W.R. Grace contributed $48.5 million to its pension plans covering U.S. employees in 2003; about $20 million in 2004; $24.1 million in 2005; $101.4 million in 2006; $76 million in 2007; and $14.8 million in January, according to the filing.

W.R. Grace, a Columbia, Md.-based specialty chemicals company, filed for bankruptcy on April 2, 2001. Its Chapter 11 case number is 01-01139.
