Fitch ups Westar Energy, Kansas Gas and Electric

Fitch Ratings said it upgraded Westar Energy, Inc. and Kansas Gas and Electric Co. (KG&E).

Affected ratings include Westar's issuer default rating to BB+ from BB, first mortgage bonds to BBB from BBB-, senior unsecured rating to BBB- from BB+ and preferred stock to BB+ from BB as well as KG&E's issuer default rating to BB+ from BB, first mortgage bonds to BBB from BBB- and secured facility notes to BBB from BBB-.

The outlook is stable.

At the same time, Fitch has assigned an F3 short-term rating for Westar and KG&E.

Fitch said the higher ratings reflect improvement in Westar's underlying operating fundamentals, regulatory environment and cash flow generation.
