S&P: WellPoint view to stable

Standard & Poor's said it revised the outlook on WellPoint Inc. and its subsidiaries to stable from negative.

The agency also said it affirmed the A+ counterparty credit and financial strength ratings on WellPoint's core operating companies and lowered the counterparty credit and financial strength ratings on Unicare Life & Health Insurance Co. to BBB, reflecting its diminished operational scope and strategic significance to WellPoint.

WellPoint's business and financial profile is relatively strong compared with its peers and the company is well positioned to preserve its credit profile in an improving, but still stressed marketplace, S&P said.

The company achieved financial results in 2010 that significantly exceeded expectations, the agency said.

Key factors in support of the outlook change include fundamental improvement in the company's financial condition and diminished risk of material earnings stress, S&P said.
