Washington Mutual seeks to settle IRS, ERISA claims with settlements

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 16 - Washington Mutual Inc. asked the court to approve two settlements in two separate filings with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

In the first filing, Washington Mutual asked the court to approve a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service regarding the outstanding tax liability issues of the WaMu Group for the 2001 to 2008 tax years.

A hearing is set for Sept. 7.

In the second filing, Washington Mutual asked the court to approve a June 18 class action ERISA litigation settlement. Contributing blended policy carriers would pay $49 million to the settlement class, the filing said.

A hearing is set for Oct. 22.

Washington Mutual, a Seattle-based savings and loan holding company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sept. 26, 2008 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Its Chapter 11 case number is 08-12229.
