Tower Automotive retiree committee appointed

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Nov. 10 - Tower Automotive, Inc. obtained court approval to appoint a committee of retired employees for its Chapter 11 case to represent retirees not already represented by a labor organization or whose labor organization has declined to serve as an authorized representative, according to a Thursday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

The retiree committee will consist of Michael W. Doherty; Hans Lescher; Duane Marcell; Joseph Manuel Mercieca; Harold R. Peterson; Thomas A. Smith and William J. Stuart.

According to the motion, Tower wants the non-union retirees to be represented while the company negotiates significant reductions to retirees' medical benefits as part of its business plan.

Tower, a Novi, Mich.-based auto parts maker, filed for bankruptcy on Feb. 1, 2005. Its Chapter 11 case number is 05-10578.
