PG&E to plead guilty to 85 counts, eyes OK of reorganization plan

By Wendy Van Sickle

Columbus, Ohio, March 23 – PG&E Corp. has resolved all state charges related to the 2018 Camp Fire through a plea agreement with the Butte County District Attorney and is working to get its plan of reorganization approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, the company said in a news release on Monday.

Under the plea agreement, PG&E will plead guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of unlawfully starting a fire stemming from the 2018 Camp Fire.

The company will pay the maximum of about $4 million in fines including the expenses related to the district attorney’s investigation and will fund efforts to restore access to water for the next five years for residents impacted by the loss of the Miocene Canal, which was destroyed by the fire.

The agreement is subject to approval by both the Butte County Superior Court and the bankruptcy court.

In the statement, PG&E chief executive officer and president Bill Johnson said the company acknowledged the devastation of the Nov. 8, 2018 fire that destroyed Paradise and Concow, Calif., impacted Magalia and other parts of Butte County, killed more than 80 people, forced evacuations and destroyed homes and businesses.

“Our equipment started the fire. Those are the facts, and with this plea agreement we accept responsibility for our role in the fire,” Johnson said.

“We will emerge from Chapter 11 as a different company prepared to serve California for the long term.”

The electric and natural gas utility is based in San Francisco. The company filed bankruptcy on Jan. 29, 2019 under Chapter 11 case number 19-30088.
