Asarco granted court OK to extend Globeville plant hourly worker agreement to May 31, 2007
By Jennifer Lanning Drey
Eugene, Ore., Aug. 21 - Asarco LLC obtained court approval to extend its collective bargaining agreement for its Globeville, Colo., plant for one year, according to a Monday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.
The agreement, which is between the plant and the United Steelworkers of America, was extended to May 31, 2007 from June 1, 2006.
Asarco said previously that it is attempting to sell the Globeville plant and, as a result, will close the plant in August.
However, the company will continue clean-up work and run the water treatment plant there through the end of 2006.
Asarco said it will need to retain the four hourly employees currently working at the plant, with plans to keep two through September and the other two through December.
Asarco, a Tucson, Ariz., mining company, filed for bankruptcy on Aug. 9, 2005. Its Chapter 11 case number is 05-21207.
