Parmalat Brasil files for bankruptcy

New York, Jan. 28 - Parmalat Finanziara SpA said that Parmalat Participacoes Do Brasil Ltd. and Parmalat Brasil SA Industria de Alimentos have "urgently" requested that bankruptcy proceedings begin.

The two companies are indirectly controlled by Parmalat Finanziara.

The request is for admission under a Concordata Preventiva, a Brazilian procedure which protects the company's assets, according to a news release from the Parma, Italy, company.
