Oragenics to start probiotic mouthrinse study
By Elaine Rigoli
Tampa, Fla., June 13 - Oragenics, Inc. said it plans to start recruitment this month for a human study for its proprietary oral probiotic product, Probiora3, designed to determine the effects of the mouthrinse on oral health.
Twenty subjects will use the Probiora3 mouthrinse twice daily for one to two months, the company said in a news release.
The human mouth contains hundreds of different types of bacteria, some of which are good and some of which are bad with regard to the health of the human host. The key to maintaining good oral health is to keep the balance of bacteria in favor of the good bacteria that support healthy gums and teeth, the release said.
Probiotics is defined as the administration of live bacteria to confer a health benefit and is typically associated with products such as yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures for maintaining gut health.
Oragenics is a biopharmaceutical company based in Alachua, Fla.
