Argentina files $12.625 billion shelf

New York, July 2 - The Republic of Argentina filed a $12.625 billion shelf registration covering debt securities, warrants and units with the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday.

Specific details of any offerings under the shelf will be detailed in subsequent prospectus supplements.

Proceeds will be used for the general purposes of the government of Argentina unless indicated otherwise at the time of sale.

The filing notes that since Dec. 24, 2001, the government has suspended payments on a "substantial portion" of its public debt and is negotiating a restructuring.
