Mesa Air Group granted interim court OK to reduce aircraft fleet

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Jan. 19 - Mesa Air Group, Inc. has received interim court approval to abandon and transfer aircraft and related equipment to reduce its fleet, according to a Tuesday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

According to the motion, the company wants to reduce the fleet to eliminate the significant cost associated with maintaining and storing the aircraft that are not in use.

Mesa said its current fleet is too large for its operations, and roughly 52 aircraft are parked and not being used.

In addition, the company said it plans to retire aircraft not needed to service its customers over the next several months.

The court has scheduled a hearing to consider any objections to the abandonment of the aircraft and related equipment in question for Jan. 26.

Mesa Air, a Phoenix-based provider of passenger and airfreight services, filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 5. The Chapter 11 case number is 10-10018.
