Mellon files automatic shelf

Des Moines, July 21 - Mellon Financial Corp. filed an automatic shelf registration in an S-3ASR filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing covers debt securities, preferred stock, depositary shares, common stock, stock purchase contracts, units, junior subordinated debentures, trust preferred securities and warrants. The securities may be structured as convertibles.

In addition to Mellon Financial Corp., the filing includes subsidiary Mellon Funding Corp. and trusts Mellon Capital III, Mellon Capital IV and Mellon Capital V.

The registration includes $1.45 billion of previously registered but unsold securities.

Mellon will specify use of proceeds when the securities are issued.

Pittsburgh-based Mellon is a financial services company.
