Mediscience, Infotonics to commercialize optical biopsy pill

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., July 24 - Mediscience Technology Corp. and Infotonics Research entered into a memorandum of understanding to develop and commercialize the Mediscience Optical Biopsy Pill.

The companies plan to commercialize the biopsy pill through the newly formed Mediscience subsidiary, Newco.

In support of Newco, Infotonics will be responsible for overall project team leadership, including preparing a prototype product for Food and Drug Administration trials. Infotonics will also assist in recruiting Newco's management team and provide office space, develop performance specifications for the biopsy pill and start up a factory to produce the product.

"The relationship with equity partner Infotonics is a synergistic and strategic fit leveraging Infotonics nano-technology capabilities and resources to provide Mediscience with an exceptional state-of-the-art advantage, over competitor's Given-Olympus imaging approach," Mediscience chief executive officer Peter Katevatis said in a company news release.

Infotonics is a consortium including Corning, Inc., Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp. that operates New York State's Center of Excellence in Photonics and Microsystems.

Mediscience is a medical device company based in Cherry Hill, N.J.
