* High yield issuance $9.01 billion for April

New York, April 30 - High-yield bond issuance turned in another strong performance in April with a total of $9.01 billion of deals coming to market, according to data compiled by Prospect News.

Year-to-date issuance now stands at $33.82 billion, far ahead of the $26.73 billion at the same point last year and already - with just a third of the year completed - at 57% of the total for all of 2002.

Credit Suisse First Boston maintained its long-standing position at the top of the underwriting tables for the year so far.

But for April Citigroup edged out CSFB with a total of $1.39 billion compared to CSFB's $1.27 billion.

Prospect News' data covers dollar-denominated deals offered to U.S. investors.

Although issuance is now running 27% ahead of 2002's pace in dollar terms, the number of deals is actually almost identical at 115 for the first four months of 2003 compared to 113 in the first four months of 2002. The increased size of deals is reflected in the average size of $294 for 2003 to date compared to $237 for the same period of 2002.

April's volume of $9.01 billion comes on the heels of three strong months - $7.82 billion in March, $10.05 billion in February and $6.93 billion in January.
