A&P announces results of auction of 25 southern Superfresh stores

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, May 25 - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. (A&P) has announced the results of the auction for 25 of its southern Superfresh locations.

A&P said it expects to receive more than $40 million in proceeds from the sale of the Superfresh locations.

According to a company news release, the results of the auction included:

• Ten stores, including two in Baltimore and one each in Parkville, Arnold, White Oak, Lutherville, Cambridge, Chestertown and Brunswick, Md., and Washington, D.C., will be sold to a joint venture between Mrs. Greens Management Corp. and Village Supermarkets;

• Supervalu was the high bidder for the company's Ellicott City, Md., store;

• Landlord Englar Center LP was the high bidder for the Westminster, Md., store; and

• The prescription customer lists of seven Superfresh stores were awarded to three different bidders, with three going to Walgreen's, three to Safeway and one to CVS/pharmacy.

The winning bids are subject to bankruptcy court approval and will be listed in motions to be filed by A&P on May 27, the release said.

The company said the sale hearings will be held on June 14, and A&P expects to cease operations of the stores in question by mid-July.

The 13 remaining Superfresh locations that were not sold at auction are expected to be closed by mid-July, subject to court approval.

As previously reported, the Superfresh locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the Maryland/Delaware shore area were not included in this bidding process. These stores continue to operate normally, A&P said.

Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea, a Montvale, N.J.-based supermarket chain, filed for bankruptcy on Dec. 12 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Its Chapter 11 case number is 10-24549.
