Goldman plans leveraged index-linked notes tied to S&P 500 index

New York, Aug. 16 - Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. plans to price 0% leveraged index-linked notes due Sept. 6, 2012 tied to the S&P 500 index, according to a 424B2 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The payout at maturity will be par plus two times any gain in the index, up to a maximum settlement amount of between $1,220.60 per $1,000 principal amount.

Investors will be exposed to any losses.

The exact terms of the notes will be set at pricing.

The notes (Cusip: 38143UA84) are expected to price on Aug. 19 and settle on Aug. 24.

Goldman Sachs & Co. is the underwriter with JPMorgan as placement agent.
