Corporate director membership group seeks to restore public, investor trust

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., March 24 - The National Association of Corporate Directors launched a nationwide campaign challenging corporate boards and individual directors of publicly traded companies to strengthen corporate governance and oversight.

According to NACD, the goal of "America's Challenge for Corporate Directors: Renew Commitment to Corporate Governance and Oversight Excellence" is to restore public and investor confidence in America's corporations.

The campaign urges boards to assess their practices with an emphasis on executive compensation, risk oversight, corporate strategy and transparency.

"If we as a nation are to emerge from the present economic crisis, confidence in corporate America must be restored," Bonnie Hill, lead director of Home Depot, Inc., said in an NACD news release.

"NACD's campaign provides the framework for boards to renew their commitment to outstanding corporate governance and oversight excellence, which are essential to rebuild America's trust in businesses."

NACD said it will publish the names of those corporate boards accepting its challenge on the NACD web site and in its print publication.

In addition, NACD will recognize boards that have fulfilled NACD's commitments with a "seal of excellence."

NACD is a member-based nonprofit organization for corporate directors based in Washington, D.C.
