By Devika Patel

Knoxville, Tenn., Jan. 28 - Morgan Joseph & Co. Inc. announced in a press release it has created a convertible securities capital markets unit to expand the company's equity and debt capital raising capabilities.

The firm named Alan Streiter as a managing director to head the new unit. He is being joined by two other investment banking colleagues, Jeffrey A. Smith and Seth Appel. Both were appointed directors.

The team joins Morgan Joseph from McMahan Securities Co LP, where Streiter was a senior managing director and head of investment banking.

Streiter joined McMahan in 1996 as a convertible securities research analyst. Since heading its investment banking department, he and his team have originated and marketed approximately a half billion dollars worth of convertible transactions, the release said. Prior to joining McMahan, he spent five years at Credit Lyonnais, engaged in a variety of banking activities including problem loan recovery. Previously, he worked two years as a credit analyst in Manufacturers Hanover's middle market lending department. He graduated with high distinction from the University of Michigan, and also holds a Master of Business Administration degree in finance and international business from New York University, where he was a Stern Scholar.

Appel has over 15 years of capital markets experience, including positions with McMahan, Knight Capital Markets and Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities. A certified public accountant, he also worked in the tax departments of Arthur Andersen & Co. and Ernst & Young's Kenneth Leventhal Real Estate Group. Appel has a Bachelor of Science degree in accountancy from the George Washington University and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance and international business from New York University's Stern School of Business.

Smith joined McMahan in 2005 to launch the corporate finance division within the investment banking department. Prior to joining McMahan, Smith was managing director of Halpern Capital, a broker dealer providing advisory and financing services to public and private companies. Smith has over 15 years of capital market experience, including positions with Morgan Keegan and Bear Stearns, the release said.

"The establishment of a dedicated convertible securities capital markets unit marks another major step in the growth of our firm and our commitment to providing our clients with a complete array of financing alternatives. This unit will enhance our offerings in this important asset class and effectively broaden the range of debt and equity instruments we can provide to meet our clients' financing and investment needs," Morgan Joseph's president and chief executive officer John F. Sorte said in the release. Morgan Joseph is a New York-based full service investment bank.
