Garlock asbestos plaintiffs’ attorney: Firm could seek more documents

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Nov. 3 – The lead attorney for a law firm representing Garlock Sealing Technologies asbestos plaintiffs said the firm would seek the unsealing of more documents if asbestos litigation is not dismissed.

According to a news release from Simon Greenstone Panatier Bartlett PC, documents were unsealed Monday in a lawsuit against the firm and others representing asbestos plaintiffs.

Simon Greenstone lead attorney Michael W. Magner said in the release that the unsealed documents will show that efforts to discredit his client are an attempt to cast blame for the company’s failure on someone other than Garlock’s management.

“This lawsuit represents nothing more than a frivolous effort to discourage victims of asbestos products and their representatives from seeking just compensation,” Magner said in the release.

“If the case against my clients is not dismissed by the court, there will be much more to come in the way of documents and testimony when the case enters the discovery phase of the litigation.

“We will push for all communications between Garlock and its attorneys to be unsealed so we can identify for the public the individuals responsible for Garlock’s bankruptcy.”

Garlock is a subsidiary of Charlotte, N.C.-based EnPro Industries Inc., which makes sealing products, bearings, compressors and engines. Garlock filed for bankruptcy on June 5, 2010 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of North Carolina, and its Chapter 11 case number is 10-31607.
