S&P may cut four energy firms

Standard & Poor's said it placed on CreditWatch with negative implications Questar Corp. (/Watch negative/A-2), Energen Corp. (BBB+/Watch negative), National Fuel Gas Co. (BBB+/Watch negative/A-2) and Equitable Resources Inc. (BBB/Watch negative/A-3).

The actions stem from a reassessment of the agency's approach to evaluating the business risk profiles of these firms given an increasing percentage of operating income and capital spending that is related to oil and gas exploration and production, according to the agency.

The watch placements were not predicated on any expected near-term liquidity issues, poor financial performance or concerns related to ongoing turmoil in the capital markets, the agency noted.
