Kodak sued by Ricoh and Ricoh Americas for U.S. patent infringement

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, April 19 - Ricoh Co., Ltd. and Ricoh Americas Corp. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Eastman Kodak Co., according to an April 18 filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

After Kodak's bankruptcy filing, the Ricoh entities said Kodak "has been and is now manufacturing, using, importing, selling and/or offering for sale numerous products that infringe on U.S. patents owned by the Ricoh parties."

In addition, the plaintiffs said Kodak is contributing to and inducing others to infringe on the patents in question.

Specifically, the Ricoh entities said Kodak is manufacturing, using, importing or selling printers, software, ink cartridges, print heads, toner, toner bodies and commercial presses covered by the patents.

The Ricoh entities said they are seeking relief for the alleged patent infringement after the bankruptcy filing date, rather than pre-bankruptcy unsecured claims. The plaintiffs are also seeking an injunction against further infringement on the U.S. patents.

Kodak is a Rochester, N.Y.-based imaging technology products and services provider to the photographic and graphic communications markets. The company filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 19, 2012 under Chapter 11 case number 12-10202.
