S&P affirms Alaska Communications

Standard & Poor's said it affirmed its ratings, including its B+ corporate credit rating, on Alaska Communications Systems Holdings Inc.

The outlook is stable.

The agency said that the affirmation follows Alaska Communications' announcement that the company is considering building fiber facilities between Alaska and the lower 48 states to increase its presence in the long distance and carrier services market.

S&P noted that the ratings on Alaska Communications continue to reflect significant competitive pressure within the limited Alaskan telecommunications market, a shareholder-oriented financial policy and expectations for near-term negative discretionary cash flow while tempering factors include the company's strong position as the largest incumbent wireline carrier in Alaska, expectations for healthy growth in the wireless business and adequate liquidity.
