Delta Air Lines posts $183 million July operating income

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Aug. 30 - Delta Air Lines, Inc. posted $183 million in operating income for July on $1.71 billion in revenues, according to a Wednesday filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

In June, the company posted a $207 million operating income on $1.706 billion in revenues.

The net income for July was $69 million, up from a $2.162 billion June net loss.

As of July 31, Delta had $2.470 billion in cash and cash equivalents, compared with $2.43 billion at the end of June.

"July's results reflect the continued momentum of our restructuring," executive vice president and chief financial officer Edward H. Bastian said in the release.

"The hard work and sacrifice of the Delta people are making a tangible difference, resulting in more than a billion dollar improvement in our operating performance year to date.

"In the coming months, the challenge will be to sustain this momentum as we move into a traditionally slower season for our industry."

Delta, an Atlanta-based airline, filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 14, 2005. Its Chapter 11 case number is 05-17923.
