AirTran nominees elected to Midwest Air's board of directors

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., June 14 - Midwest Air Group, Inc.'s shareholders elected three directors nominated by AirTran Holdings, Inc. to Midwest's nine-member board of directors at the annual meeting on Thursday.

John Albertine, Jeffrey Erickson and Charles Kalmbach were elected to replace three of Midwest's incumbent directors, receiving an estimated 65% of shares voted. AirTran chairman and chief executive officer Joe Leonard called the results "an important victory for all Midwest shareholders."

"While we are disappointed by today's results, we recognize that our shareholders have spoken," Midwest chairman and chief executive officer Timothy E. Hoeksema said in a company news release. "The new directors, along with the entire board, will be fully accountable to all Midwest Air Group shareholders."

AirTran was also granted permission to present its acquisition proposal to the Midwest board at a date and time to be announced. Midwest has not decided whether to enter into negotiations with AirTran.

Midwest is a Milwaukee-based provider of jet service to primarily business travelers. AirTran is the parent company of AirTran Airways, a low-fare airline based in Orlando, Fla.
