Varian investor Gamco buys 646,919 shares ahead of Agilent merger

Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 30 -Varian Inc. shareholders led by Gamco Asset Management Inc. bought 646,919 shares between Aug. 31 and Oct. 23 at prices from $50.98 to $51.4187 each, according to a schedule 13D filed on Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The investors beneficially own 1,501,040 shares, or 5.19%, of the company's outstanding stock.

In July, Agilent Technologies, Inc. announced it would acquire Varian for $52 cash per share, or approximately $1.5 billion.

Varian stockholders approved the merger on Oct. 5.

Based in Santa Clara, Calif., Agilent Technologies provides core bio-analytical and electronic measurement solutions to the communications, electronics, life sciences and chemical analysis industries.

Varian makes scientific instruments and vacuum products. The company is located in Palo Alto, Calif.
