Fitch applies A- to Aetna notes

Fitch Ratings said it assigned a rating of A- to Aetna Inc.'s issuance of new senior unsecured notes.

The rating is equivalent to the ratings assigned to Aetna's existing senior unsecured notes and reflects standard notching based on Fitch's rating criteria.

The agency affirmed Aetna's ratings with a negative outlook on April 14. The negative outlook reflects expectations that Aetna's near- to intermediate-term financial leverage ratios are likely to be higher than those the company has historically used and may exceed levels Fitch views as supportive of the company's current ratings.

Fitch said it expects proceeds from the issuance to be used primarily to fund the repayment of a portion of maturing debt in 2017 and for general corporate purposes. The agency does not expect the issuance to materially alter Aetna's financial leverage.
