S&P ups Southern Co., subsidiaries

S&P said it upgraded the issuer credit ratings on Southern Co. and its subsidiaries Atlanta Gas Light Co., Mississippi Power Co. and Southern Co. Gas, to A- from BBB+.

The agency also raised issuer ratings on Georgia Power Co. (GPC) to A from BBB+, raised Alabama Power Co. to A from A-, raised Southern Power Co. to BBB+ from BBB and affirmed the A- issuer rating on Northern Illinois Gas Co. (Nicor Gas Co.).

On Monday, Georgia Power announced its nuclear power plant, Vogtle Unit 4, reached commercial operations and is in service.

“The commencement of Vogtle Unit 4's commercial operations, concludes the company's higher-risk construction phase that has constrained its credit quality for more than a decade,” S&P said in a press release.

The outlooks are stable.
