Diocese of Oakland eyes another extension of exclusive plan periods

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., April 5 – The Roman Catholic Bishop of Oakland, known as the Diocese of Oakland, is seeking a third extension of its exclusive periods to file and solicit votes on a Chapter 11 plan, according to a motion filed Friday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

The diocese asked the court to extend the exclusive plan filing period through Sept. 6 from May 6 and its exclusive solicitation period through Nov. 5 from July 5.

The debtor said it has mediation sessions scheduled for April, May, and June with its official committee of unsecured creditors and insurers.

“The debtor needs additional time to evaluate how a plan can best be structured, to continue its analysis of claims following the claims bar date, and to continue mediation with the committee and the insurers as described above,” the diocese said in the motion.

The diocese filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 8, 2023 under case number 23-40523.
