Diocese of Oakland ordered to mediate with committee, insurers

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., Jan. 23 – The Roman Catholic Bishop of Oakland, known as the Diocese of Oakland, has been ordered to mediation with the official committee of unsecured creditors and its insurers, according to an order filed Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

As previously reported, the diocese has pursued recovery on its insurance assets through two adversary proceedings against its insurers.

The diocese reached agreement with the committee regarding proposed mediators prior to filing a motion with the court seeking approval of the mediation.

The diocese filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 8, 2023 under case number 23-40523.
