Diocese of Oakland gets extension of exclusive plan periods

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., Aug. 22 – The Roman Catholic Bishop of Oakland, known as the Diocese of Oakland, secured an extension of its exclusive periods to file and solicit votes on a Chapter 11 plan, according to an order filed Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

The diocese’s exclusive plan filing period was extended through Jan. 5 and its exclusive solicitation period was extended through March 4, 2024.

The diocese said that while it has made substantial progress in taking the necessary steps to set the groundwork for proposing a Chapter 11 plan, additional time is needed to evaluate how a plan can best be structured and negotiated with the official committee of unsecured creditors and other constituencies.

Additional time is also needed to liquidate the debtor’s claims against their historical insurance carriers in an adversary proceeding filed in the Chapter 11 case, which the diocese believes will materially increase the assets available to satisfy claims, the diocese said.

The diocese filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 8 under case number 23-40523.
