Boston Scientific acquires proprietary stent technologies from Rusch

By E. Janene Geiss

Philadelphia, Oct. 24 - Boston Scientific Corp. announced Monday that is has acquired a portfolio of proprietary endoscopic stent technologies from Willy Rusch GmbH, a Teleflex Medical company.

This portfolio includes assets related to the Polyflex Esophageal Stent and Polyflex Airway Stent Systems currently distributed in the United States by Boston Scientific under a prior agreement with Rusch, as well as the Y Dynamic Tracheo-Bronchial Stent System, officials said in a company news release.

Details on the new agreement were not disclosed. Rusch will continue to distribute these endoscopic stent products in Europe through 2005, officials said.

The technologies are used to treat gastrointestinal and airway obstructions, which can cause difficulty in eating and swallowing. Airway strictures also may restrict breathing and could be life-threatening.

"The Polyflex stent, a self-expanding plastic stent, gives us a treatment option for patients with benign esophageal strictures that are unresponsive to other treatments, and could potentially change the way we treat the thousands of patients with these types of esophageal strictures each year," David L. Carr-Locke, director of endoscopy, Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said in the release.

Boston Scientific is a Natick, Mass.-based developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices.
