Matthews Asia Sustainability Fund to target Asian firms involved in environmental, social challenges

By Toni Weeks

San Luis Obispo, Calif., Feb. 13 – Matthews International Funds announced it will offer a new fund that invests in Asian companies that profit from global environmental and social challenges and/or proactively manage long-term risks presented by these challenges.

According to an N-1A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Matthews Asia Sustainability Fund will seek long-term capital appreciation. Under normal market conditions, it will invest at least 80% of its net assets in the common and preferred stocks of companies located in Asia. The fund may also invest in the convertible securities and fixed-income securities of Asian companies.

The stock selection process will take into consideration environmental, social and governance factors deemed to be relevant in assessing the sustainability of a business.

Vivek Tanneeru will be the lead portfolio manager, with Winnie Chwang as co-manager.

The fund will offer investor class and institutional class shares. The ticker symbols have not yet been set.

Shareholder fees will include a redemption fee of 2% for shares sold or exchanged within 90 days of purchase. Including management fees of 0.65%, and taking into account the effects of a fee waiver and expense reimbursement agreement, total annual fund operating expenses are expected to be 1.45% for investor class and 1.25% for institutional class shares.

San Francisco-based Matthews International Capital Management, LLC will be the investment adviser.
