U.S. Steel Canada in mediation; pension, benefits hearings postponed

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Sept. 30 – U.S. Steel Canada Inc. completed five days of confidential mediation, and that mediation is ongoing, according to a release from United Steelworkers (USW) Locals 8782 and 1005.

The USW said a number of motions were scheduled to be heard by the Ontario Superior Court this week in connection with U.S. Steel Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act case, but those hearings have been rescheduled for Oct. 7 and Oct. 8.

Specifically, the USW said motions to be heard by the court on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8 include the company’s motion to stop making specified pension plan contributions and to stop paying for crucial benefits for retirees known as other post-employment benefits. The union said it is opposing U.S. Steel Canada’s efforts to avoid its responsibilities to its employees and retirees.

In addition, the USW said members and retirees can expect to receive a letter from U.S. Steel Canada in the near future regarding debtor-in-possession financing and other post-employment benefits.

As previously reported, parent company, U.S. Steel, has decided to move production of high-value steel out of Hamilton and Nanticoke to its American facilities.

“We know that Hamilton Works and Lake Erie Works can succeed as stable, long-term, profitable businesses with good jobs and retirements for our members,” USW Ontario director Marty Warren said in the release.

Hamilton, Ont.-based U.S. Steel Canada’s operations are located at Lake Erie Works, a fully integrated steelmaking facility, and at Hamilton Works, a cokemaking and finishing facility. U.S. Steel is a Pittsburgh-based steelmaker.
