By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Oct. 23 – U. S. Steel Canada, Inc. employees represented by United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1005 ratified a new collective bargaining agreement that will run through March 31, 2017, according to a company news release.

The agreement covers about 600 employees at the company’s Hamilton Works facility.

“Having the stability of a collective bargaining agreement through March 31, 2017 will allow the company to focus on continuing discussions with stakeholders to implement a comprehensive operational and financial restructuring plan,” president and general manager Michael McQuade said in the release.

Chief restructuring officer William Aziz said in the release: “The extension of the agreement with USW Local 1005 sends a strong message of stability to the suppliers and customers of U.S. Steel Canada.”

According to the release, court-appointed monitor Ernst & Young Inc. will continue to oversee the business and financial affairs of the company during the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act process.

Hamilton, Ont.-based U.S. Steel Canada’s operations are located at Lake Erie Works, a fully integrated steelmaking facility, and at Hamilton Works, a cokemaking and finishing facility.
