Gamco, Gabelli buy 2.7 million shares of Ventana

Charlotte, N.C., Feb. 4 - Investors led by Gamco Asset Management Inc. and Gabelli Funds, LLC have a 7.97% ownership interest in Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. following the purchase of 2,738,948 shares of the company's stock.

The shares were acquired between Jan 22. and Feb. 1 priced from $88.92 to $89.14, according to a schedule 13D filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The investors beneficially own a total of 2,759,048 shares of Ventana's outstanding stock.

Roche's previously announced $89.50-per-share tender offer for Ventana ends Feb. 7. Ventana agreed to be acquired by Roche for some $3.4 billion.

Roche is a Basel, Switzerland-based pharmaceutical and diagnostics company.

Ventana is a medical device company located in Tucson.
