By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., May 25 - Varian Medical Systems is breaking ground in Beijing, China, for a new $12 million manufacturing facility to produce medical linear accelerators for treating cancer with radiotherapy, according to a company news release.

The 134,000-square-foot-facility, slated for completion in March 2007, will be owned and operated by Varian's wholly foreign-owned enterprise, Varian Medical Systems Beijing Co., Ltd., led by Wang Xioa Yun.

"This important project expands Varian's global manufacturing and service capability in the radiation therapy market with the greatest growth potential in the world," president and chief executive officer Tim Guertin said in the release.

"We are especially pleased to have Mr. Wang, China's most experienced radiation therapy executive, to lead this important new enterprise."

Varian has an installed base of more than 250 linear accelerators in China, where it has operated for more than 25 years.

Based in Palo Alto, Calif., Varian manufactures medical technology for treating cancer with radiotherapy and neurological conditions with radiosurgery.
