Syms Corp. CEO owns 55.8% of company's stock

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., July 30 - Syms Corp. chief executive officer Marcy Syms and Sy Syms reported beneficially ownership of 8,321,330 shares, or 55.8%, of the company's stock in a schedule 13D filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Marcy Syms denied that her family had plans to take the company private when she addressed shareholders at the company's annual meeting earlier in July.

Syms said some shareholders "misconstrued" the company's actions when it sought to begin trading on the Pink Sheets and deregister with the SEC, a decision Syms said was motivated "solely by a desire to save money," according to an earlier SEC filing.

Since then, the company has reregistered with the SEC and its shares are traded on Nasdaq.

Syms Corp. is a Secaucus, N.J.-based off-price retailer.
