Stereotaxis completes preclinical evaluation of a magnetically enabled injection catheter

Erie, Pa., May 16 - Stereotaxis, Inc. said it has successfully completed a proof-of-concept demonstration of a magnetically enabled endocardial injection catheter developed in collaboration with Biologics Delivery Systems Group, Cordis Corp.

The demonstration, the first of its kind, represents a significant breakthrough in the future of adult (non-embryonic) stem cell therapy, according to a company news release.

The procedure, performed remotely from a control room, involved the magnetic steering of the Stereotaxis Niobe Magnetic Navigation System, the electromechanical mapping features of the Noga XP Cardiac Navigation System and a magnetically enabled injection catheter.

Emerson Perin navigated the magnetic injection catheter to 15 targeted injection sites in the left ventricle, including delivery to the most challenging ventricular locations.

"Based on my previous experiences, the combination of these two advanced technologies has the potential to become the new gold standard for precise, safe and rapid injection of adult stem cells and other therapies into the heart," Perin said in the release.

Benefits of the magnetic navigation platform include faster left ventricular mapping and improved safety and delivery of biologics due to enhanced catheter tip control, Stereotaxis said.

Perin will be presenting an update on the procedure and the magnetically enabled remote mapping and injection system at the EuroPCR 2006 conference in Paris.

St. Louis-based Stereotaxis designs, manufactures and markets an advanced cardiology instrument control system to enhance the treatment of coronary artery disease and arrhythmias.
