Mentor investor Gabelli buys 1,841,500 shares

Charlotte, N.C., Dec. 29 - A group of Mentor Corp. investors led by Gabelli Asset Management Inc. bought 1,841,500 shares of the company's stock between Oct. 30 and Dec. 24 at prices from $15.94 to $30.87 each, it was reported in a schedule 13D filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
With the purchase, Gabelli beneficially owns 2,139,500 shares, or 6.33%, of the Santa Barbara, Calif., medical products company.
It was previously reported that Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Maple Merger, Sub, Inc. began a $31.00-per-share cash tender offer for all outstanding shares of Mentor's common stock. The offer is set to end at midnight ET on Jan. 12.
Johnson & Johnson is a New Brunswick, N.J.-based pharmaceutical company.
