Lombard Medical retains distribution rights for Aorfix

By Elaine Rigoli

Tampa, Fla., Aug. 25 - Lombard Medical Technologies plc said it will continue to distribute its Aorfix AAA stent graft for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms in territories outside of the United States.

Following discussions with Boston Scientific Ltd., it was agreed that it was not in the interests of either party at this time for Boston to exercise its existing option, due to lapse Aug. 30, to act as exclusive distributor.

"We are making good progress with sales of Aorfix both directly in the U.K. and throughout Europe with our growing network of distributors. We have recently signed up distributors in Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey, which will further widen our geographic presence," executive chairman Alistair Taylor said in a news release.

"By retaining non U.S. distribution we will achieve increased margins in the medium to long term from sales of Aorfix. The positive 12-month clinical data and the launch of a second-generation version of Aorfix have also added impetus to our sales effort."

Lombard's Aorfix AAA stent graft, designed to minimally invasively treat abdominal aortic aneurysms, is approved for sale in Europe and is in U.S. clinical trials.

The company said Food and Drug Administration approval is expected in 2009.

London-based Lombard is a medical-devices group developing stent grafts and other medical products for use in the treatment of vascular disease.
