CSFB top high yield underwriter year to date

New York, May 31 - Credit Suisse First Boston was the top underwriter of high-yield bonds in May, maintaining its position as number one for the year so far, according to data compiled by Prospect News.

CSFB, which was also first in February, March and for 2001 as a whole, has brought to market $5.091 billion of junk bonds for the year through the end of May (with bonds included on their settlement date).

Salomon, which ranks second, has brought $3.588 billion, according to the Prospect News data.

Overall issuance for May was $6.076 billion, lower than April's $7.381 billion and also lower than the $8.618 billion in May 2001.

Year-to-date new-issue volume of $31.052 billion continues to lag well behind the $41.910 billion at the same point in 2001, showing a 26% decline.

Average deal size is also much smaller at $190.5 million versus $319.9 million for the comparable period of 2001.

Criteria

* The tables include all dollar-denominated offerings sold in the U.S. as public or Rule 144A deals reported to Prospect News.

* Issues maturing in 397 days or less are excluded.

* Convertibles, trust preferreds, capital securities and preferred stock are excluded.

* Fixed-rate medium-term notes with a face value above $100 million are included. All other MTNs are excluded.

* Deals rated investment-grade by either Standard & Poor's or Moody's Investors Service are excluded but deals not rated by both are included.

* Offerings are included in the time period in which they settle.

* Amounts are based on the total sales price (face amount multiplied by the offering price). The full amount is credited to the bookrunner. For multiple leads, the total value is divided equally among joint bookrunners.
