CSFB top high yield underwriter year to date

* High yield issuance $24.96 billion year to date

* UBS top high yield underwriter in April

* High yield issuance $7.38 billion in April

New York, April 30 - Credit Suisse First Boston remained number one among underwriters of high-yield bonds for the year so far, according to data compiled by Prospect News.

But for the month of April, UBS Warburg came in first, although by a narrow margin of just $44 million over number-two placed Salomon Smith Barney.

CSFB, which was also first in February, March and for 2001 as a whole, has brought to market $3.869 billion of junk bonds for the year through the end of April (with bonds included on their settlement date).

Salomon, which ranks second, has brought $3.065 billion, according to the Prospect News data.

UBS Warburg was helped to first place for April by the current enthusiasm for homebuilders. It was sole bookrunner on $350 million for Beazer Homes USA, Inc. and $200 million for WCI Communities, Inc.

Overall issuance for April was $7.381 billion, very similar to the $7.738 billion recorded for April 2001.

However year-to-date issuance of $24.958 billion remains significantly below the $33.291 total at the same point last year, a 25% decline.

Average deal size is much smaller as well at $240 versus $340.
