Banc of America top U.S. market high-yield underwriter year to date

• U.S. market high-yield issuance totals $8.80 billion year to date

New York, Feb. 27 - Banc of America continued as the number one underwriter of high-yield bonds for the year so far, according to data compiled by Prospect News.

While far from robust compared to historical levels, activity continued at a better pace compared with the slump that has dragged down most of the past year.

February saw $3.92 billion of new issuance, slightly down from January's $4.87 billion, but bringing the year-to-date total to $8.80 billion, 8.5% ahead of the $8.11 billion at the same stage of 2008.

Banc of America has brought $2.01 billion of new deals so far this year, 22.8% of the total. That places it comfortably ahead of number-two ranked JPMorgan at $1.46 billion or 16.6% of the total.

Banc of America was also first in February.

The figures were similar if emerging markets deals are excluded.

B of A remains on top if non-dollar bonds are included, while the total increases to $9.22 billion.

Europe saw no new deals.

The U.S. market figures cover dollar-denominated high-yield deals issued in the United States as registered offerings or under Rule 144A and include all issuers, regardless of their home country.
